No one in our nation’s capital should go hungry.
Right now, thousands of families across Washington, DC are struggling to put food on the table. Rising costs, unstable SNAP benefits, and shrinking access to affordable groceries have made food insecurity an everyday reality for far too many.
According to the Capital Area Food Bank’s 2025 Hunger Report, food insecurity in Washington, DC is deepening. Nearly one in three households in the District now struggles to afford enough food, and families with lower incomes face food insecurity at more than double that rate. In parts of the city like Wards 7 and 8, where grocery access is especially limited, families continue to experience the highest levels of need.
At the same time, many DC residents are feeling the impact of reduced or uncertain SNAP benefits, leaving households short hundreds of dollars each month in food support. Rising grocery prices, up more than 20% in just two years, are stretching budgets even further.
At Fresh Basket, we believe everyone deserves access to fresh, nourishing food. That is why we created Feed a DC Family, a community-powered effort to ensure families in need have consistent access to healthy, locally grown food.
Every donation, no matter the size, helps deliver farm-fresh produce directly to DC families facing food insecurity.
