Fresh Basket is more than a weekly produce subscription — it’s a movement to build a fairer, more connected food system.

Launched by The Farmers Alliance, Fresh Basket brings seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, and pantry staples directly from small local farms to homes across Washington, D.C. Our mission is simple: make fresh, healthy food more accessible while supporting farmers who care deeply for the land and their communities.

This is just the beginning. As our network grows and logistics evolve, Fresh Basket will offer even more pantry goods, culturally significant ingredients, baked goods, medicinal and ancestral herbs, and foods that reflect the multicultural communities we serve.

    A second-generation family-run farm growing diverse vegetables, greens, and heritage crops with a commitment to sustainability and a profound respect for the land they steward.

  • Beespoke Farms (Blue Ridge Mountains)

    A regenerative farm offering raw honey and pasture-raised duck and chicken eggs. The hens and ducks roam freely, forage naturally, and are cared for without hormones or antibiotics, resulting in rich yolks and exceptional flavor. Their products reflect a deep respect for the land and their growing community.

  • CafĂ© Medrano (CopĂĄn, Honduras & D.C.-based)

    Small-batch, shade-grown coffee from a fourth-generation family farm in Honduras. Brought to D.C. by longtime educators, Café Medrano blends heritage, sustainability, and bold flavor in every cup.

    Hibiscus and pineapple juices crafted by Oluwatobi (Tobi) Osobukola-Abubu with health, heritage, and flavor in mind. Lightly sweetened and rich in plant-based benefits, these elixirs are made in small batches for peak freshness.

    Extra virgin olive oil cold-pressed within hours of harvest from olives grown on a third-generation farm. Hand-harvested using chemical-free, traditional methods that preserve nutrients and taste.

About The Farmers Alliance

The Farmers Alliance is a nonprofit working to create a more resilient food system that supports small producers and increases access to fresh, high-quality food.

We partner with small and family-run farms to reduce barriers, expand market access, and build the infrastructure needed for a thriving regional food economy. Whether rural or urban, every farmer in our network receives the support they need to grow not just crops, but viable businesses.

Our Core Programs Include:

  • Aggregation and distribution services that connect local farmers directly to institutional buyers, such as schools, hospitals, churches, and community organizations, solving one of the biggest hurdles small producers face: getting food reliably to market.

  • Technical assistance and farmer training in areas such as organic certification, business development, and participation in nutritional benefits programs. We also support introductory urban agriculture courses in partnership with UDC’s Firebird Farm.

  • Community access programs like Fresh Basket, which connect consumers to seasonal, local food through direct-to-door and hub-based deliveries.

  • Policy advocacy and systems change aimed at building a more just, transparent, and sustainable food system that supports both farmers and communities.

We believe that a healthier food future starts with strong farmer support and direct community connection. Our work helps growers of all backgrounds participate fully in local food economies, while increasing access to the fresh, nourishing foods every community deserves.
